Use the Silhouette Cameo (or Portrait) to Sketch Your Favourite Photos

Today I’m going to show you how use your Silhouette Cameo and Sketch Pens to turn your favourite photo into one of a kind artwork!

This is a very easy project that requires only the most basic working knowledge of Silhouette Studio Designer Edition. Please note that the tools that allow you to create your own sketches are only available in the paid Designer Edition of Silhouette Studio. (You can still sketch with the free version of Studio but you have to purchase the files from the online store.)

Tools & Materials

  • Digital photos
  • Silhouette Studio Designer Edition
  • Silhouette Sketch Pens
  • White cardstock
  • Frame

Start by opening your photo or jpeg file. Resize your photo to your liking. Now head over to the trace box and select the area to be traced. I made my trace area slightly larger than 5 x 7 so my final picture would fit in my frame.

Adjust the high and low pass filters and threshold as you need. My suggestion is simply play around with the settings because the results will vary depending on your photo and the details you want to highlight for the sketch. I used the following settings for my photo:

  • High Pass —–> 4.25
  • Low Pass  —–> 0.25
  • Threshold —–> 48%

Click trace and then delete the photo. You should be left with a picture made up of cutlines. Select your picture and then go to the Sketch window. Choose the plain sketch option.

Draw with your Silhouette Cameo or PortraitLoad the card stock and replace your cutting blade with a sketch pen. Send your project  to the Silhouette. Be sure to change the cut settings from blade to Sketch Pen. Now sit back and relax while your machine draws a beautiful, one of a kind sketch!.

Silhouette Cameo Sketch Feature

I really like using the Sketch pens with the Cameo. There are many sketch files available via the Silhoeutte Online Store and if you have the designer edition of studio, you can easily turn regular cut files into sketches.

That’s it for now! Have fun making beautiful pictures with your sketch pens!

Until next time…Happy Crafting!

  1. Thank you so much for the information ….you have opened my eyes on so many things to try….

  2. OMG this is fantastic! How clever and talented to come up with this technique. I’ve just got the sketch pens for my Cameo and are looking for ways to use them other than the – slightly boring – files from Silhouette store. Thank you so sooo much. Sending you sunshine and greetings from Denmark.

    • Cool! I just logged in to check out the comments. Thank you for the compliment all the way from Denmark! I hope you were able to sketch some of your favourite photos with your Cameo!
